This Sunday, April 14th, Pink Martini and lead singer China Forbes will be in Dallas to present a lively evening of song from their new album, Je Dis Oui, as well as some old favorites from past albums. Be there when this globetrotting phenomenon heads to Annette Strauss Square this weekend!
Twenty-three years ago, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, thinking that one day he would run for mayor. Like other eager beaver politicians-in-training, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun… but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly.
Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers.
Lauderdale met China Forbes, Pink Martini’s “Diva Next Door” lead vocalist, at Harvard. Late at night, they would break into the lower common room in their college dormitory and sing arias by Puccini and Verdi – and the occasional campy Barbara Streisand cover – thus sealing their creative collaboration. Three years after graduating, Lauderdale called Forbes and asked her to join Pink Martini. Their first song “Sympathique” – with the chorus “Je ne veux pas travailler” (“I don’t want to work”) – became an overnight sensation in France, and was even nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards.
Now, Pink Martini has twelve musicians perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia and New Zealand and North America. Don’t miss them when they stop in to Dallas on Sunday, April 14th! Tickets begin at $38 and may be purchased at www.attpac.org.
